Frequently asked questions

What's the best card for a colorblind mahjong player?

Because we use inverse highlighting and outlining in addition to color to differentiate between elements, either color palette is accessible to people with all forms of color vision deficiency.

The Classic palette closely matches the colors used on the official NMJL card, while still incorporating the visual cues that make Mahj For All cards accessible.

Most colorblind players prefer the High Contrast palette. Some mahjong teachers prefer the High Contrast palette because its blue-orange-gray color scheme is intentionally distinct from the suits on the tiles. This helps new players understand that the colors on the card are used for notation—not to represent specific suits.

Are Mahj For All reproduction cards historically accurate?

The hands and rules are true to the NMJL original, but the formatting is (fortunately!) not.

Since 1937, American mahjong notation has evolved. The rules have evolved, too. Mahj For All reproductions preserve the original content, but update the antiquated notation to the modern convention.

For 1940 - 1993 cards, I clarified and summarized the rules of the era. By incorporating the supplemental rules on the back of the card, you can play the game as it was actually played in that particular year.

If you're shopping for a milestone year, you should know that my reproductions faithfully reproduce the following anomalies:

  • 1940 through 1954 and 1960 DO NOT have year-themed hands
  • 1955 through 1959 and 1970 have MIS-MATCHED year-themed hands (for example 1955 features 1954, and 1970 celebrates 1776 and 1492!)

Does the Spanish-language card use the same hands as the official NMJL card?

This card is compatible with the official NMJL card, allowing multilingual friends to play together. A special thank you to Anna Friedrich @TexMexMahjong, Houston area mahjong teacher and native Spanish speaker for translating the card for us!

Which size card should I choose?

  • Large cards use the same 12pt font size as a Large NMJL card. When opened, the Mahj For All Large card measures 10" × 7" (compare to Large NMJL card 18.4" × 4.8").
  • Standard cards use the same 11pt font size as a Standard NMJL card. When opened, the Mahj For All Standard card measures 9.2″ × 6.25″ (compare to Standard NMJL card 15.4″ × 4″).
  • Small cards use 10pt font size. When opened, the Mahj For All Small card measures 8.5″ × 5.5″.
  • Desktop cards use 24pt font size (×2 larger than the Large NMJL card) and measure 10″ × 5″. Each category is printed on its own page.

How do Mahj For All cards compare to NMJL cards?

  • In 1992, NMJL started adding parenthetical notes (i.e. "Any 2 Suits") to address red-green colorblind concerns. Mahj For All adapted cards use inverse highlighting and outlining to differentiate suits instead of parenthetical notes.
  • NMJL cards are printed in 3-panels with soft-touch coating. Print shops can only accommodate those special features on massive bulk orders. Because Mahj For All cards are made-to-order, I print on a 2-panel format with satin-touch coating.

What are Card Clutches and Tile Purses?

  • Card Clutch — a slim structured clutch — the interior slip pocket fits a Standard NMJL card, main body is suitable for Large cards
  • Tile Purse — a soft roomy crossbody — can fit an entire set of tiles or wear it as your daily purse

Do you have anything for players who read braille?

Yes — our braille mahjong card is a downloadable resource you can print at home or take to a braillist. It follows the same layout as our print cards so sighted and braille-reading players can play from the same page.
